Who really pays the taxes? The top 5% of taxpayers pay more than half of all personal income taxes. 

The top 1% earned more than $269,496 in taxable income and paid 34.8% of all personal income taxes - average rate 27.1%.

The top 5% earned more than $114,729 in taxable income and paid 53.8% of all personal income taxes - average rate 23.6%.

The top 10% earned more than $83,220 in taxable income and paid 65% of all personal income taxes - average rate 21.4%.

The top 25% earned more than $50,607 in taxable income and paid 82.7% of all personal income taxes - average rate 18.2%.

The top 50% earned more than $25,491 in taxable income and paid 95.8% of all personal income taxes - average rate 16.0%.

The bottom 50% earned less than $25,491 in taxable income and paid 4.2% of all personal income taxes - average rate 4.4%.
